I are one. You need to do well in high school especially in math and science. Then get into the best school that you can afford and work your tail off. You will probably find that the science and math you did so well in you are now average in the good school.
I chose the career because it pays well and you get to solve problems and deal with engineering situations on an everyday basis.
The favorite part of the job was starting up a big piece of equipment that you start with the concept, go on to the purchase and installation and then start it up and watch it run well.
There are all kinds of mechanical engineers: some deal with maintenance, some with just hydraulics, others with piping systems, my specialty was with heat transfer, ovens and furnaces, and all of the items dealing with ovens and furnaces.
The challenge is to identify the problems and solve them. Keep a good name and treat people fairly and be honorable.
You work with production, maintenance and all of the folks that work at a plant. Mechanical engineers are normally the largest component of the engineers in a the plant as far as engineers go. You touch all aspects of a plant operation.
There are no average days and yes you always have a supervisor of some type or another. Just like having parents, the more you do well the more they trust you. You become an expert in what you do and folks reley on what you do and what you tell them if you are good at what you do.
